Can you tell us about the process of making your work?

Felix Bucklow

I usually begin with an idea of outcome. Although it rarely remains on a single path because I like to be impulsive and encourage mistakes. If everything goes to plan I feel fairly disappointed.

How would you define your work in a few words (ideally in 3 words)?
Fatalistic, nostalgic and playful.

Is there any story behind this painting? How did you come up with this painting idea?

‘Get Down’ includes bits and pieces taken from other paintings/projects. Literally cut out and stuck on. It’s a scrap heap of used work. The face positioned at the top of the painting is actually a piece of laser cut ply that I had made to use as an ink stamp. I initially printed a smiley in the same position but realised that the stamp itself was way more fitting. Now you can make a ‘happy print’ from the relief of the painting; it has an unlimited action and the potential to repeat itself which fits well with the themes. It’s a cynical outlook but at least they’re smiling.

What colour is used the most in this painting?

Yellow Ochre. It makes me think of the hotel carpet in ‘The Shining’ and used cigarette filters.

What would be the best way to exhibit your painting?

I’ve started making frames for most of my paintings now but funnily enough this has encouraged me to stop hanging them on walls. I’d be keen to try a sculptural install.

Can you mention any artists you, lately or generally, take inspiration from?

I finally watched all of David Chase’s ‘The Sopranos’ recently. I’ve always admired a series’ ability to create a mythology that eventually can reference itself, the current events of ‘the real world’ and in this case even cross into other imaginary dimensions like ‘The Godfather’ or ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. I think this is why I work in series.

What about the place where you work? What’s your studio space look like?

My studio has a dual function. I use it to frame artworks and to make artwork so there are a lot of shelves, things hanging off walls etc. I have a really nice table on wheels which was made by a friend/carpenter as payment for a painting. I spend most of my time in there so all of my belongings are in my studio and it’s a comforting place to be. Flats seem to come and go but my studio stays the same.

What does your mum think about your art?

I’m not sure what she thinks of my paintings, but I know she’s happy that I’ve found a way to keep to keep making them.

Which are your plans for the near future?

I’m packing my bags before I set off to Barreiro. A town just across from Lisbon where there is a great residency platform called PADA. I’ll be there until april.
