Artwork’s Title: Jeu de mains: Ciseaux, 2019
Materials Used: Oil painting
Studio Based: ChezKit artist-run-space, Pantin, (France)

Can you tell us about the process of making your work?
This painting has basically two different levels of paint: the pink flat plane and the organic white shapes. I have worked on them within the same surface but separately, masking with tape and protecting the opposite areas in order to create a solid impression of divergence.
How would you define your work in a few words (ideally in 3 words)?
Cute flowing game.
How did you come up with this painting idea? Is there any story behind this painting?
This painting “ciseaux” belongs to the series of works called “jeu de mains”, which refers to the almost universal hand game where each player simultaneously brings up a shape from a hidden hand. This series of works represents also a little game of opposite shapes and dichotomous formal concepts such us “organic/ geometric”, “hard/ soft” or “solid/ fluid”.
What colour is used the most in this painting?
I guess the background is pink made of English red and titanium white. I think it worked pretty well… in fact I haven’t stopped using it since!
What would be the best way to exhibit your work?
I quite like it when this paintings is laying on the ground in an horizontal position. In general, my artistic practice focuses on perception of space, so I am always exploring it: hanging my paintings in different positions, for example. I also love that a canvas is not a flat, boring two-dimensional surface. It is flexible and plastic, so it gives you plenty of room to experiment.
Can you mention any artists you, lately or generally, take inspiration from?
Nick Devereux, Fabian Treiber or Leticia Martínez Pérez.
How do you know when this painting was finished?
This time I knew it when I added the black lines with spray paint and I felt it was strong enough. I am kinda obsessed with prep work, so I always do a ton of sketches and compositions before I start. So yes, since the very beginning I had an idea of how it would look!
What about the place where you work? What’s your studio space look like?
I am super lucky, because I share the coolest working place a collective of artists called ChezKit. We are twelve people, in Pantin, the suburbs of Paris, and the people there are brilliant and inspiring!
What does your mum think about your art?
She is a fan! Perhaps a bit too much…
Which exhibition did you visit last?
Last week I went to my friend Margot Darvogne’s awesome group show, called “Un Garage à Soi” and curated by Julia Maura (http://stationstation.fr/un-garage-a-soi/).
Which are your plans for the near future?
Right now… I am currently getting ready for the 69th edition of Jeune Création, where I am presenting ‘yo estuve allí’ (I was there), an immersive installation made of suspended canvases and wooden sculptures. ‘Yo estuve allí’ represents the fictional reconstruction of a place where I lived by using a combination of memories and imagination. The exhibition will take place at the Fiminco foundation in Romainville, from the 25th of January till the 6th February of 2020. Please visit it!
