Can you tell us about the process of making your work?
William Schaeuble
I’m constantly working in my sketchbook, where all ideas end up and where some evolve to become paintings/final pieces. Most ideas I have for paintings come from a combination of everything I encounter day to day. There is not one specific subject I’m trying to explore with my work, I want to tell all sorts of stories with my paintings, and the stories I tell come from almost any direction. These ideas are scattered initially, and up until the time I’m in front of the canvas, these ideas are shifting. But eventually everything comes together.
How would you define your work in a few words (ideally in 3 words)?
Instinctive, naritive, organic.
How did you come up with this painting idea? Is there any story behind this painting?
This painting got its start after listening to the Bob Dylan song of the same name, Desolation Row. In the song Dylan sings about a place outside of society filled with surreal imagery and figures taken from history. He combines these seemingly unrelated events into one piece to tell a story. With the idea of how this song was written and the subjects in it, I wanted to do a painting in response with similar themes.
What colour is used the most in this painting?
Yellow.
What would be the best way to exhibit your work?
Ideally on the wall of a nice exhibition. But any wall will do.
Can you mention any artists you, lately or generally, take inspiration from?
Joan Miro, Roger Brown, Ken Price, Henri Matisse, John Dilg and Grant Wood amongst many more.
How do you know when this painting was finished?
When I got tired of this painting and wanted to start another piece it was finished.
What about the place where you work? What’s your studio space look like?
Being a college student I work wherever I can. My studio spaces shift between a studio on campus, in my apartment, or at my parents house back home in Iowa. I try to work wherever I can, I make it work.
What does your mum think about your art?
My mum is a big fan of mine, always asking for paintings that she can hang up at home.
Which exhibition did you visit last?
Manet and Modern Beauty at the Art Institute of Chicago
Which are your plans for the near future?
Continue painting, continue studying, make as much as I can.
