Sun Yifei 孙逸飞
Artwork’s Title: Perfect Lovers
Materials Used: Acrylic on canvas
Studio Based: Beijing, China

Can you tell us about the process of making your work?
The work is drawn using airbrush.
How would you define your work in a few words (ideally in 3 words)?
Psychoanalytic, metaphorical, printing.
Would you use another three different words to describe the ‘Perfect Lovers‘ painting?
Consternation, sexual relations, desire.
How did you come up with this painting idea? Is there any story behind this painting?
This is called the perfect lover. But in fact, according to Lacan, there is no perfect sexual relationship, because our views on others come from our own desires, and our own desires can never be satisfied. The only thing that can achieve a perfect sexual relationship, to use Zizek’s metaphor, is the combination of flesh light and dildo.
What colour is used the most in this painting?
Maybe brown.
What would be the best way to exhibit your work?
Hanging on a blank wall.
Can you mention any artists you, lately or generally, take inspiration from?
Jorg Immendorff.
How do you know when this painting was finished?
This is indeed a difficult problem. According to my working method, I usually draw a small sketch before I draw. This small sketch basically includes all the images I want to express. In a sense, my work has been completed in the small draft stage, and painting is just the icing on the cake.
What about the place where you work? What’s your studio space look like?
Because I am still studying for a master’s degree, the studio is provided by the school. Usually a large studio is divided into several parts for use. I am personally satisfied with the current studio, of course it would be better if there is an independent and larger studio.
Is there any particular message that you wish your viewers can take from this painting?
Maybe some thinking about the relationship between the sexes.
What does your mum think about your art?
She may not fully understand the content of some of my works, such as sex and murder, because in fact, the Chinese are still a little hard to tell.
Which exhibition did you visit last?
Perhaps the most memorable one recently was the Xinfeng Village Biennale in Jingzhou, Hubei, around this time last year.
Which are your plans for the near future?
In the future, a lot of time may be devoted to painting.
